90-Day Recovery • Land-Based Healing • Culture • Community - Coming Soon
The Medicine Within is a community-based healing model designed to bring recovery, cultural connection, practical life skills, and land-based wellness directly into the communities we serve.
Rather than asking people to leave their families, culture, responsibilities, and support systems in order to begin healing, our vision is to bring the healing environment to them.
We propose partnering with First Nations communities willing to provide a temporary space where our team can establish a rotating Community Healing & Training Centre.
Programming would operate within the community for an agreed period before rotating into another partner Nation. This allows us to begin serving communities now, demonstrate outcomes, train local capacity, and refine the model while working toward our long-term vision of establishing a permanent land-based healing home.
At the centre of the model is a combination of our 90-Day Community Recovery Program and land-based living and learning.
The 90-Day component provides the structured healing journey. Participants explore addiction and the brain, trauma and survival responses, emotional regulation, grief and loss, anger, communication, boundaries, self-trust, identity, relationships, forgiveness, relapse prevention, future planning, and reconnection with self.
The land-based component takes that learning beyond the classroom.
Participants are invited to practice healing through relationship with the land, culture, community, Elders, traditional knowledge, responsibility, and one another.
Depending upon the Nation, season, territory, and teachings available, land-based activities may include gardening, food preparation and preservation, fishing, hunting teachings, medicines, harvesting, smoking and preparing foods, cultural crafts, walking, storytelling, language, ceremony, sharing circles, traditional skills, and learning from Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
The intention is not to impose one cultural model upon another Nation. Each community carries its own teachings. We bring the healing framework while working alongside the Nation to ensure its own people, protocols, language, land, Elders, and cultural knowledge remain at the centre.
Recovery is more than understanding why we hurt.
It is learning what to do when the hurt shows up again.
Our approach blends trauma-informed education, body-based/somatic awareness, emotional regulation, Indigenous ways of knowing, cultural connection, land-based learning, practical life skills, and community support.
Participants learn to recognize what is happening in their body before reaction becomes behaviour. They begin understanding triggers, grief, anger, shame, survival responses, relationships, and substance use differently, not simply as something “wrong” with them, but as patterns that can be understood, worked with, and changed.
Then we practice.
A boundary is practiced in relationship. Emotional regulation is practiced during frustration. Responsibility is strengthened through meaningful work. Connection develops around meals, land, ceremony and laughter. Identity begins rebuilding through culture, contribution, belonging and purpose.
The classroom provides the language.
The land provides the experience.
Community provides the place to practice.
The rotating model is intentionally designed to leave something behind.
Where appropriate, community staff, wellness workers, youth workers, cultural workers and other helpers can participate alongside the program, learn the framework, observe facilitation, and gradually build confidence in delivering or supporting components locally.
This creates an opportunity for the investment to reach beyond one group of participants.
Each rotation can help strengthen:
people → families → local helpers → community capacity.
Over time, participating Nations can develop their own stronger network of culturally grounded recovery supports while remaining connected to our training, facilitation and ongoing programming.
Residential treatment will always be an important pathway, but it cannot be the only pathway.
Some people are not ready to leave home. Some have children, employment, Elders or family responsibilities. Others may complete treatment and return home only to discover that the environment where they must practice recovery has not changed.
Community-based programming creates another doorway.
Participants can learn recovery skills while still living their real lives, encountering their relationships, responsibilities, triggers and challenges while having structured support available to help them navigate them differently.
It also creates opportunities for people who may never walk through the doors of a traditional treatment centre to begin their healing journey.
The rotating Community Healing & Training Centre is the beginning, not the final destination.
Our long-term vision is to establish a permanent land-based healing home where culture, recovery, mental wellness, traditional knowledge, practical skills and community living come together.
A place with room for gardens and food sovereignty. Places to gather and teach. Space for ceremony, cultural activities, traditional food preparation, land-based skills, healing groups, individual support, retreats and training.
Until that permanent home is established, the work does not have to wait.
By partnering with Nations willing to provide temporary space, we can begin bringing this model directly into communities, learning from each Nation we serve and building relationships that ultimately shape the permanent centre itself.
At the heart of this model is a simple belief:
Our people are more than what has happened to them.
Healing is not simply removing substances or managing symptoms. It is rebuilding relationship, with the body, identity, family, culture, community, land and future.
We are not coming into communities claiming to carry their medicine.
The community already carries its medicine.
The land carries medicine.
Culture carries medicine.
Our Elders carry medicine.
And the people themselves carry medicine.
Our role is to create a safe, structured and culturally respectful pathway where people can begin remembering how to find it again.
